Why active positions should stay in context
How position visibility helps people stay oriented when switching markets or returning to the product.
“A position should not disappear just because someone switched markets.”
Context should travel with the user
On a platform with several markets, it is easy to lose track of an action when active positions are hidden on a separate page. People switch markets, return later, or open another view and have to figure out what is happening again.
Good visibility connects a position to its current context: market, direction, time, and state should be discoverable without searching. Chart markers and an active-position list solve different problems, so they should work together rather than create noisy duplication.
From active position to history
When an operation completes, it should leave the active list for a clear reason and remain available in history. That avoids the impression that an action was lost or never recorded.
Visibility does not change risk or predict outcomes. It is a UX principle: the state of a user action should remain discoverable throughout its lifecycle.
Visibility should not depend on the current screen
Someone may start an action on one market, switch to another, and return later. If an active position appears only on its original screen, the person has to remember its details and search for the right tab. A list of active actions available from several points in the product makes it easier to recover context without reopening every market.
A position card should show enough to orient someone: instrument, direction, timing, and current state. It should not duplicate every detail. A good structure separates a short summary from a full record page, so a person can open more information when they actually need it.
Signals and states need distinct meanings
Markers on a chart are useful when they agree with the position card and history. Color, label, or icon should carry the same meaning everywhere. People need to know not just the direction but whether a record is active, pending, or complete. Hidden differences between similar symbols do not help.
An active position and a historical record serve different purposes: one helps track a current state, the other explains a past outcome. Their connection can be made through navigation and a shared reference in the interface without overwhelming users with technical data. When both are reachable, the product is easier to review as a whole.
Returning to the product should be straightforward
After a break, users should not have to search from the beginning. A small ‘Active’ section in a logical place, a clear market filter, and an understandable empty state all help. If data is still loading, the interface should say so rather than show a blank view that looks like a position has disappeared.
Discoverability matters across multiple markets and devices. Changing language or browser session should not alter the underlying state; only its presentation changes. This article discusses navigation and transparency, not a guarantee of outcome or advice to take more actions.
Discoverability belongs in the product
Information that exists but cannot be found quickly is practically absent for a user. Position discoverability should therefore be reviewed alongside data accuracy: can someone find an active record after switching markets, returning to an account, and moving to a phone? The answer should be understandable even if the layout differs between devices.
A product may provide a short overview and a more detailed history, but the transition between them should be obvious. Empty states matter too: they should explain that there are no active records rather than look like an error. These details support orientation without encouraging someone to trade more often.
